The saint imitated the example of Christ as literally as it was in him to do so; barefoot, and in absolute poverty, he proclaimed the reign of love. This heroic imitation of Christ's poverty was perhaps the distinctive mark of Francis's vocation, and he was undoubtedly, as Bossuet expresses it, the most ardent, enthusiastic, and desperate lover of poverty the world has yet seen. After money Francis most detested discord and divisions. Peace, therefore, became his watchword, and the pathetic reconciliation he effected in his last days between the Bishop and Potesta of Assisi is bit one instance out of many of his power to quell the storms of passion and restore tranquility to hearts torn asunder by civil strife. The duty of a servant of God, Francis declared, was to lift up the hearts of men and move them to spiritual gladness. Hence it was not "from monastic stalls or with the careful irresponsibility of the enclosed student" that the saint and his followers addressed the people; "they dwelt among them and grappled with the evils of the system under which the people groaned". They worked in return for their fare, doing for the lowest the most menial labour, and speaking to the poorest words of hope such as the world had not heard for many a day. In this wise Francis bridged the chasm between an aristocratic clergy and the common people, and though he taught no new doctrine, he so far repopularized the old one given on the Mount that the Gospel took on a new life and called forth a new love.

Gambling was a popular pastime among the Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest. One of many games, the bone game (also called "slahal"), was played between two teams sitting opposite one another. One team member held up his hands, each of which contained a small bone, and the opposite team tried to guess which hand held the marked bone. Other team members held sticks used for scoring and for keeping up a rhythmic beat.

Later, after forced relocation to reservations following 1850s treaties, the Indian agents who administered the reservations discouraged traditional gambling games----except during Treaty Day celebrations.

Today, tribal gaming takes a modern form, the "Indian casino." Revenues from these Native-owned casino and bingo businesses provide for the economic and educational advancement of tribal members.

Although all trees are valued as natural resources, foremost among them is the Western Red Cedar. It is hard to overestimate the value of red cedar and difficult to put into words the unique role it plays in local communities. Ancestral families along Puget Sound used all parts of the tree in all aspects of their daily lives. It provided the material for canoes, houses, and weapons, and all sorts of clothing, tools, and medicines. Wood from the tree, soft and fragrant, is particularly resistant to decay. It is also a highly efficient fuel that gives off little smoke as it burns. Cedar bark is still harvested from live trees around Puget Sound. The bark is peeled off in long triangular sheets, narrow enough to minimize damage to the tree.

Hilbert, who will turn 83 this summer, was named a Washington Living Treasure in 1989. For 15 years, she taught Lushootseed language and literature to hundreds of University of Washington students and was instrumental in publishing the first Lushootseed dictionary.

"There's no Lushootseed word for 'love' and no word for 'can't'," said Hilbert, seated at the dining room table in her South Seattle home. Meaning in the language of the Coast Salish people, she says, centers around "the beauty of the land and honor our people felt for all things beautiful."

In July, Hilbert will release her latest book on Seattle-area place names that she co-authored with an anthropologist and a number of her students.

The Story of Sun Pu-erh and the Greater Vehicle

Sun Pu-erh was the wife of a wealthy merchant and was one of the Seven Taoist Immortals who started on the path to immortality by being the student of Wang Ch-ung yang. Master Wang was one of the lineage holders of the Complete Reality School of Taoism. Sun Pu-erh was known as lively intellectual of great beauty. These qualities, however, became barriers to her deeper understanding of the Tao. Her intellect, used badly, made her unreceptive to the ideas being presented by Master Wang. After realizing this, she vowed to become humble and receptive, treasuring the lessons given to her by this great master. She had learned a most important lesson signified by Hexagram 61, Inner Truth, which teaches that the heart that is open attracts the truth to itself. As her heart opened she began to rapidly absorb the teachings of Master Wang.

The Three Vehicles of the Taoist Path

Master Wang eventually instructed her in the three vehicles of the Taoist path:
"The Great Vehicle", he said, is the fastest and most direct path to Immortality. The followers of The Great Vehicle are not attached to life and death. Using the secret methods of internal alchemy, they return to the Void and merge with Tao. This is the Great Vehicle."

" The Middle Vehicle," he went on to say," represents those who observe the rites and chant the names of the deities, especially Guan Yin. They purify their hearts and constantly practice compassion for others and let their original mind of Tao shine forth. The use the secrets of compassionate practice to untie the sealed knots of the heart chakra and become enlightened beings capable of great magical deeds. The Immortals are known to them."

"The Lower Vehicle," he said, are those who do good deeds, take care of their families and are content with themselves. They lead long and healthy lives. They may achieve worldly fame and hold high position or they may merchant or even the humblest people."

The Courage of Sun Pu-erh

Then the master asked Sun Pu-erh "Which path is yours?" Without hesitation Sun Pu-erh said, "The Greater Vehicle." "Then," Master Wang said, "you must travel to Loyang which is more than 1,000 miles away where you will meet an Immortal and learn the ultimate secrets of the universe." "Are you willing to go?, " he asked. Sun Pu-erh, knowing that she must renounce all her riches and her happy family life in order to do this, said "Nothing in the world is more important to me than this undertaking." Master Wang, who could see into the future, thought a moment and said, "The trip is dangerous. Your great beauty will hinder you. You will become the target of vile and evil men who would use your beauty. Rather than submit to this treatment, you will kill yourself. It will have a tragic end. I am very sorry. You cannot make this journey."

Sun Pu-erh returned home with a very sad heart. She had overcome the defect of a closed mind but what could she do about her beauty? With great courage she filled a wok with hot oil and then threw in water. The oil flew up in her face and burned her very badly. Her great beauty, which had given her so pleasure in life, was now irrevocably destroyed.

She returned to Master Wang later, no longer a beauty, but now with a face that was scarred and ugly. Master Wang was astonished and then greatly moved by her actions and he said slowly "I did not travel this long way in vain. I have found the student that shall go to Loyang." Immediately Master Wang began teaching her the secret formulas of internal alchemy which she studied and mastered under his tutelage.

Sun Pu-erh Pretends Madness

But Sun Pu-erh still found it difficult to leave her husband and family whom she loved and cherished. She felt burdened by their love and had no desire to hurt them. She did not tell them of her aspirations for she felt that they would not understand. Finally, Sun Pu-erh could think of no way to leave but to pretend to be mad. She began to wear strange clothing and did not brush her hair, letting it remain wild and bushy. She became demented and strange. She was often so boisterous and intractable that even her family began to avoid her.

Sun Pu-erh Goes to Loyang

Even so, as Sun Pu-erh began to leave the mansion, a servant intervened to stop her. She bit the servant and laughed wildly and hurriedly escaped from her home and the family that she loved. Once she was on the road there was no turning back. Her family looked for her for many years but it was all in vain. On the road she remained hidden in the disguise of a wild, crazy person with a deeply scarred face. In this way, she was left alone and remained unharmed on the long journey. After an arduous, long journey Sun Pu-erh arrived at Loyang and found the Immortal who was waiting for her. According to legend, when she achieve immortality, Sun Pu-erh ascended to the sky in her physical body in broad daylight.

Breathplay with the Goddess

Having just attended an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) Meditation group, I struck by the fact that so few people in recovery haven't the faintest idea of how to meditate. The format of the group of recovering meditators is simple enough, we spend 20 minutes in silent meditation, usually with some gentle ambient background music, and then take turns shareing our experience as it relates to our recovery.

I draw on a number of 'pagan' easten practices, including but not limited to Tantric (Nath, Hindu, Islamic and Tibetian), Primitive Qi-Gung, Tai Chi and Pakua for meridian work. Prior to a sit, I like to begin with hand massage to improve circulation of Qi (12 Qi meridians run through the fingertips). I do PC Kiegal lifts (yogic 'root-lock') by contracting the anus/urinary muscles in a gentle breathing cycle (pull inbreath/relaese outbreath) to 'kindle the fire' and start to arourse the cauldon energy of the Goddess Brigid/Kundalini.

Another little helper I learned is Tan Diem contraction. One Tai Chi master was able to place a coin 2 inches below the navel and force an abdominal contraction strong enough to flip the coin 2 feet in the air. If you push your finger straight down into this point you can feel this energy if you contract your abdomen enough to force to finger away. Slow contraction of this muscle along with rythmic breathing and emphasis on theTan Diem point arouses tremendous 'pre-born Qi, (the umbilical was the original source of air and nutrition). The 'heat' from the cauldron exercises helps this pre-born Qi rise rapidly.

Now all is ready for my shakti breathwork! I imagine I am 'face to face' with the Goddess. As I breathe OUT my breath enters the Goddess and I imagine myself 'giving all', every bit of my life force to the Goddess as if to bring a dying child to life with my life force concentrated in my breath. When I breath IN the Goddess fills me with every bit ofher life force, and I experience being connected to her by the exchange of this one eternal breath that she always renewsfor me. I imagine that she is all that exists outside myself. All that I see out thewindows of my eyes are fact just looking into her eyes. The Goddess/existence/theuniverse then is breathing me.

Sometimes this can be a very erotic experience and it brings my inside and outside nicely together. Sometimes it's a little scary like the 'breathplay' in BDSM. Learning how the breath teaches us the balance between in/out, hot/cool,giving/recieving, pushing away/pulling toward is integrial to my Magick work as aDruidic Bard. I the tradition of Druidism I subscribe the main force of life is called Awen or the breath of spirit.

The premise is simple. All people have the potential to grow into the very best people they can be. This growth can spread like light from a candle. When you give away some of your candle�s light to light someone else�s candle, you don�t have less light; everyone has more light. A circle symbolizes this growth.

People enter life as small circles with the potential to grow into big circles. The world is full of circles of all sizes. Big circlesleaders, movers, shakers, initiators, independent thinkers. Others are smaller circlessecond in command, responders, reactors, etc. And then there are very small circlesfollowers, hesitators, non-contributors.

All circles could be big, but some are afraid, some choose to stay small, some don�t believe they could get bigger. As they go through life, small circles encounter other circles, large and small, and several possible interactions are possible. A large circle can encourage that little circle to grow. Or the small circle, intimidated by the size of the big circle, can try to take bites out of it and �nibble� it down to size. Or the big circle, intimidated by the potential growth of the small circle, can do the same. Small circles can nibble another growing small circle, because his getting bigger is frightening. He's getting bigger, so they must be getting smaller--right?

Here are some sentences you will hear if you are being nibbled down to a less threatening size: You�re too emotional. You�re too sensitive. You�re too serious. You�re too friendly. You work too hard. You�re too outspoken. You always give your ideas first. We�ve always done it this way. This isn�t really your field, is it? The list goes on.

The book, in these simple, quiet terms, goes on to tell what happens to nibblers and nibblees. It addresses the fear some people have that if one person gets �bigger�, someone else has to get �smaller�and they�re afraid it will be them. It tells how sometimes a circle will try desperately to stay small so others will be more comfortable and like him/her, and avoid the nibbles. It tells the joy of circles who encourage other circles to get as big as they can, because ultimately the world is a better place for it.

To many minds all this liberty for the individual spells sheer anarchy. Every newcomer, every friend who looks at A.A. for the first time is greatly puzzled. Those who look closely soon have the key to this strange paradox. The A.A. member has to conform to the principles of recovery. His life actually depends upon obedience to spiritual principles. If he deviates too far, the penalty is sure and swift; he sickens and dies. At first he goes along because he must, but later he discovers a way of life he really wants to live. Moreover, he finds he cannot keep this priceless gift unless he gives it away. Neither he nor anybody else can survive unless he carries the A.A. message. The moment this Twelfth Step work forms a group, another discovery is made - that most individuals cannot recover unless there is a group. Realization dawns that he is but a small part of a great whole; that no personal sacrifice is too great for preservation of the Fellowship. He learns that the clamor of desires and ambitions within him must be silenced whenever these could damage the group. It becomes plain that the group must survive or the individual will not.

In Buddhism we work with the central channel which starts four fingers below the navel in the centre of the body and it rises to a place eight fingers behind the original hair line on the top of the head. The name means "Shortening of the Way," and is the label applied by the Bene Gesserit to the unknown for which they sought a genetic solution — a unique male Bene Gesserit whose organic mental powers would bridge space and time. Also known as "the one who can be many places at once."
The phrase Kwisatz Haderach originally came from Hebrew (קְפִיצַת הַדֶּרֶךְ, possibly originally Tiberian Hebrew QpîáhadDére, Standard Hebrew Qfiat haDére, commonly Kfitzat haDérech) and means verbatim "jump of the path", a Hebrew archaic equivalent of the English expression "short cut".

The Bene Gesserit hoped to create a male Reverend Mother capable of absolute powers of prescience, able to predict all possible futures and to cause select threads of time to be realized through manipulation. They hoped to use him to strengthen Bene Gesserit power among other power loci within the Empire. Unknown to them at first, their breeding program came to a successful conclusion with the birth of Paul Atreides, except for the fact that they could not control him. The result was the being they had prized and anticipated the most became the instrument by which their order was diminished.
Jessica Atreides was conceived through the seduction of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen by Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, and born to the Bene Gesserit in the year 10,154 after the formation of the Spacing Guild. She was raised to be bound as a concubine to the Duke Leto Atreides, and instructed to produce a daughter, but no sons, for him. This daughter would be wed to Feyd-Rautha, nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and heir to House Harkonnen, healing the generations old rift between House Atreides and House Harkonnen, and producing the Kwisatz Haderach for the Bene Gesserit. The Kwisatz Haderach is the male reverend mother who has other memories of his male line, something the all-female Bene Gesserit lack, along with the female line.
However, Jessica falls in love with Leto, and produces a son for him, Paul (there is some indication that Jessica believed she could achieve the Kwisatz Haderach herself, one generation early). Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, and eventually sets the Imperium on a course lasting thousands of years in the person of his son, Leto Atreides II. Much to the frustration of the Bene Gesserit, they do not control Paul, and the events of the coming millennia leave Jessica noteworthy as a figure of history who committed a great wrong (according to the Bene Gesserit); in the coming centuries, for a Bene Gesserit to choose her love over the instructions of her order is known as "the Jessica Crime".
Due to the advent of Paul and Leto II, the Bene Gesserit become terrified of accidentally producing another Kwisatz Haderach because being able to see the future fixes the future along a certain path; to avoid this, the Bene Gesserit provoke the Honoured Matres into destroying most of the remnants of Leto II whose prescience had locked the human race into a fixed path and also were forced to kill a number of offspring of the Atreides line in order to prevent another Kwistatz Haderach from controlling their destiny ever again. The Bene Tleilax claim to have bred their own Kwisatz Haderach. The Tleilax ran into the same problems the Bene Gesserit had with Paul Atreides: they were unable to control their creation. He eventually committed suicide.
